Losing weight is like getting rich; almost everybody would like to do it, but only a precious few are able to do what it takes to make it happen. Would-be dieters drop billions of dollars every year on personal training, supplements, books, workout gadgets and even hypnosis treatments in search of the one thing that will help them get rid of the bulge.
The weight loss industry has become a cash cow for companies and individuals who sell these products, which, ironically, has done more harm than good to the consumer. In this highly competitive marketplace, it’s not easy for a company to make their product stand out amongst the ever growing sea of similar products. Yet, the staggering sums of money that can be made with a successful product make it a worthwhile effort; one that invites some very deceptive marketing practices.
To illustrate my point, I’m going to show you two sales page headlines for a similar product.
New Chinese Slimming Tea, when combined with proper diet and exercise, can increase weight loss by up to 20% over a 12 week period
New Megatrim Slimming Tea unlocks a 2,000 year old Chinese secret to burn fat faster than we thought was humanly possible! Order now and started losing up to 3-5lbs a day!!!
If you’ve browsed through a fitness magazine or searched for weight loss products online, you know which of these two you’re more likely to come across. The first statement uses a long forgotten marketing technique that has been all but forgotten; telling the truth. I know; it’s barely recognizable anymore as we haven’t seen it in so long.
What’s so unfortunate about this is that a 20% increase in weight loss over 12 weeks is actually great. It’s about as much as anyone could hope for with any supplement; most deliver far less.
The second statement is pure hype. It is designed to stir the emotions of those who are overweight and desperate for a solution. There are no 2,000 year old secret Chinese teas; and you couldn’t lose 3-5lbs per day without amputating body parts. I drink Chinese teas every day, as they’re full of nutrients and come with a myriad of health benefits, but they’ve been available for decades, no one was hiding them. They’ve only become more popular recently because of all the hype.
I’ve also been a personal trainer for many years, and can tell you from experience; if you’re losing an average of 1-1.5 lbs per week, you’re doing great. Sure, if you’re over 400lbs and a Biggest Loser contestant you can lose much more, but real life is nothing like fat camp. You can’t exercise all day long; you have to go to work and take care of your responsibilities. Real personal trainers can’t scream in your face and throw you out of the gym if you give up. They wouldn’t have any clients left.
What most people need in order to learn how to lose weight effectively is a healthy dose of reality. Otherwise intelligent people need to stop believing the kind of nonsense is the second statement above. If you were watching a late night infomercial that claimed to be able to get you a master’s degree in 3 months without studying or taking any exams, would you believe it?
I don’t think so. I think you’d shake your head and change the channel. When it comes to fat loss products, we’ve been hearing ridiculous hyped up claims for so long that we’re starting to actually believe them. Millions of consumers are stuck in a vicious cycle of:
- Buying the latest product
- Failing to get results
- Falling into a depression
- Getting increasingly desperate for a solution
- Staring the cycle all over again
The weight loss industry knows this all too well, and will keep launching new ‘miracle products’ as long as desperate gullible buyers keep pulling out their credit cards and buying them.
I’ve actually come out with my own new weight loss e-book which tells you everything you need to know to lose weight as fast as possible. As a lucky reader of this article you will get it at no cost. Without further adieu, here it is in its entirety:
What it Really Takes To Lose Weight By Truth Teller
- Eat a diet consisting primarily of whole foods including lean meats, fresh vegetables, healthy fats and some fruit and nuts.
- Achieve a daily calorie deficit of 500-1,000 calories; this would be, on average, a 1,200-1,500 calorie per day diet for women and a 2,000-2,400 calorie per day diet for men.
- Exercise for 30-45 minutes per day 4-6 times per week performing both resistance and aerobic exercises.
- Repeat until your desired weight is reached.
The End
I know; I’ll have to make my millions somewhere else. My next book will tell people that the sun is hot and ice is actually frozen water.
I hope the sarcasm was good for a laugh, but what I really hope is that you get realistic about your fat loss goals and how to achieve them. Those four steps really do explain it all; the hard part is actually doing them each day.
